With cyberattacks on the rise – whether it’s your bank, social media, or email account being hacked – it’s good to know how the Gardaí handles these cases. In Ireland, when you report a crime to the Gardaí, they record the details in their computer system called PULSE (Police Using Leading Systems Effectively). Each incident is assigned a unique PULSE ID number. This number helps you and the Gardaí track and reference your specific case throughout the investigation. If you need to inquire about your case or provide additional information, mentioning your PULSE ID ensures that the Gardaí can quickly locate the correct record. You are obliged to use this number to liaise with your service provider (e.g. bank) and rectify the situation in cases of cyberattacks.
An investigation begins when a complaint is made to the Gardaí by a victim or another person. If you are the victim, the Gardaí will ask to make a statement, which will be written down and then signed by you. The first police officer you talk to will write down your personal details – such as your name, address, date of birth and phone number – and details about what happened.
As the investigation continues, the Gardaí will review all the evidence, which is then submitted to the Senior Garda and the Director of Public Prosecutions to decide if charges will be filed in the case.
After reporting the crime, expect a letter from the Garda Victims Service Office. This letter includes details of the police officer you spoke to, the PULSE ID and a summary of the crime report.
Any queries about the investigation should be directed to the investigating Garda or the Garda Victims Service Office. If you need to visit a Garda station, there’s a handy online directory to help you find your nearest one. You can access it at Garda Station Directory.
